TeamTGM Targets Victory at VIR

Alton, Va. (23 August 2016) – Following a podium finish at Road America three weeks ago, TeamTGM will be back in IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge action this weekend at Virginia International Raceway for Round 8 of the 2016 Championship.
Having debuted in the GS class electing to start the season at the Sebring race earlier this year with the No. 64 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport after years of competing in the ST category, the Atlanta-based team has continued to see remarkable progress throughout the course of the season.
Drivers Ted Giovanis and Guy Cosmo each have vast experience at the Virginia road course located outside of Danville and both are looking forward to translating that into a positive result on Saturday. Giovanis first raced at the track in IMSA competition in 2007, having previously competed in club racing events. A highlight of Giovanis’ time spent at VIR was when his team finished fourth overall and second in class at a 13-hour endurance race.
“VIR is one of the tracks I’ve had the most laps around,” said Giovanis. “We’re really looking forward to it. We were very strong there last year, but unfortunately got crashed out early on. I’m very familiar with this track, as is Guy (Cosmo), and our car should be competitive at VIR. The track is similar to Road America but it has more bumps. So part of what we’ll do on the test day is make sure we get a handle on what the car likes over those bumps.”
Cosmo, who has raced in everything from Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge to ALMS and GRAND-AM – including time in Daytona Prototype, GTLM, and LMP2 machinery, won in his first-ever VIR race in 2003. In addition to his years of race experience at VIR, he’s also coached several drivers at the venue and put in thousands of miles of testing at the 3.27-mile road course throughout the years.
“VIR is practically a part of who I am,” said Cosmo of his return to the circuit. “It’s one of the most enjoyable tracks to drive because of the variety and challenges it offers. It has slow, tight corners, long straights with big brake zones, elevation changes and of course the high-speed esses that are unlike any other. It’s an incredible driver’s track. The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport should be great at VIR because of its agile, nimble handling and great braking.”
TeamTGM is fresh off of its best finish of the year at Road America. Giovanis and Cosmo combined for a podium finish of third in the No. 64 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. The duo is targeting a step or two higher on the podium this Saturday at VIR.
“We had a really strong run at Road America and in just one weekend we made great gains in the handling of the TGM Cayman GT4s,” added Cosmo. “We’ll continue to push for better performance from the cars and we are also working on our pit strategies and pit stop performances. We are working to develop TGM into a championship-winning team and we have all the tools necessary to make that happen. It will take lots of hard work, but the desire is there within everyone at TGM to do so. Honestly, I am looking for a win at VIR. It can absolutely happen.”
TeamTGM will be participating in a pair of Porsche events during the weekend, visiting the PorschePlatz on Saturday morning for a Q & A, with an early start for the  "PCA Cafe" sponsored by PCA and hosted by TeamTGM Cayman GT4 Clubsport starting at 7 AM on Sunday.
The VIR event weekend kicks off with a promoter test day on Thursday, August 25. Friday features two official practice sessions ahead of a 15-minute qualifying run at 7:05 PM ET which will be streamed LIVE on IMSA.tv. The 2.5-hour race will go green on Saturday at 1:55 PM ET and can be viewed LIVE on IMSA.tv.
